With the beginning of autumn, when the colors and scent of ripe fruits and the still warm sun fill our villages, a new story of SUNCOKRET rural tourism begins – The Sunflower Award. For the thirteenth year in a row, this project has been opening up space to the residents of our beautiful country, as well as to foreign individuals and organizations who, with their effort, knowledge and love, revive rural communities, preserve heritage and create a sustainable future. Thus, the Sunflower network grows year after year and takes on an international character.
The competition is intended for everyone who develops tourism and economic offerings in their communities in an authentic and innovative way – from small family farms and creative craftsmen, to local communities and tourism organizations that combine tradition with modern trends.
This year too, Suncokret takes us on a journey through the beauties of our beautiful country; from the golden plains of Slavonia, through the green hills of Zagorje and the heart of Lika, to fragrant Dalmatia and the magnificent Adriatic coast. It introduces us to the work of hardworking hands of farmers, the tastes and smells of local cuisine, and the treasures hidden in each of our villages. Suncokret reveals stories worth hearing, people worth meeting, and places worth visiting.
“SUNCOKRET is more than an award – it is a recognition of joint work, courage and creativity. Our winners and participants are proof that rural areas are not only guardians of the past, but also generators of new ideas and opportunities. We want to recognize and support those who show that sustainability, quality and togetherness can be the foundation of economic and tourist development,” says M. Sc. Dijana Katica, president of the Croatian Association for Tourism and Rural Development “Village Members’ Club” and founder of the project.
